The High Court in London decided that prime minister Theresa May would be unable to invoke Article 50 herself, but May was defiant as her government plans to challenge the ruling and push ahead with its plans for a "Hard Brexit" to begin from the end of March 2017.

The news has somewhat made it more difficult for May and her government to push through Brexit, and set the value of sterling to its highest level against the dollar in the last month. It has allowed companies with strong British connections to rise today, including airline company IAG, the combination of Iberia and British Airways. IAG led the advances on Thursday with a 3.2% rise.
